Japanese researchers found that molecular hydrogen (H₂) selectively neutralised the hydroxyl radical, the most damaging reactive oxygen species, while leaving alone the oxygen species the body uses for normal signalling.
That selectivity is what caught scientists' attention: most antioxidants act indiscriminately, and this one appeared not to. The work was conducted in cells and in an animal model, so it does not describe what happens when a person drinks hydrogen water, but it opened the field. Hundreds of studies have followed in the two decades since.

A pooled analysis of six studies in healthy adults found molecular hydrogen improved antioxidant potential capacity, with a larger effect for stop-start exercise like intervals and team sports.
Six studies, seven experiments, 76 healthy adults. The improvement in antioxidant potential was statistically significant, and stronger for intermittent exercise than continuous exercise. In the same analysis the researchers did not find a significant reduction in oxidative stress markers themselves, and they called for larger, more rigorous studies.

In a double-blind randomised trial, adults drinking hydrogen-rich water daily for four weeks showed reduced programmed cell death in blood cells compared with those drinking plain water.
Participants were healthy adults aged 20 to 59. The hydrogen group drank 1.5 litres of hydrogen-rich water per day for four weeks, against plain water, in a double-blind design. Researchers recorded lower apoptosis (programmed cell death) in peripheral blood mononuclear cells. Worth noting the intake: 1.5 litres daily is a substantial amount of water.

An eight-week randomised trial recorded improved self-reported sleep quality, along with reductions in total and LDL cholesterol.
Thirty-six participants, all adults with obesity, drinking hydrogen-rich water daily for eight weeks in a randomised controlled design. Improvement in subjective sleep quality reached statistical significance, as did reductions in total and LDL cholesterol. A small trial in a specific population; findings may not extend to other groups.

In a double-blind crossover study, volunteers drinking hydrogen-rich water showed improvement on a standard psychological distress score and reduced resting sympathetic nervous system activity versus placebo.
Twenty-six healthy volunteers (mean age 34) drank 600 ml of hydrogen-rich water daily, in a double-blind, placebo-controlled crossover design. Researchers recorded a reduced K6 psychological distress score and lower resting sympathetic nerve activity. A small study that has not been independently replicated; an early signal rather than a settled finding.
Muscle fatigue in athletesPilot study · 2012
Athletes drinking hydrogen-rich water before intense exercise showed lower blood lactate levels and less exercise-induced decline in muscle function.
Ten trained athletes, placebo-controlled. Those hydrating with hydrogen-rich water before exercise showed reduced blood lactate and a smaller decline in muscle function than placebo. This is the most frequently quoted athletic study on hydrogen water and also one of the smallest: ten participants makes it a pilot study, not evidence of a general effect.

Is hydrogen water actually real science, or another wellness fad?
Real science, and still early. Molecular hydrogen has been studied for over a decade; the field opened with a 2007 paper in Nature Medicine showing it acts as a selective antioxidant, and hundreds of studies have followed. Results are promising in places and inconclusive in others, and we are not going to pretend otherwise. The published studies are linked above, including the ones that found less than researchers hoped.
How is Kai-H2 different from the $30 bottles on Amazon?
Three things. First, the hydrogen figure: many cheap bottles do not publish one at all, or publish one nobody can check. Kai-H2 is built to up to 1,000 PPB per cycle and says so. Can I use tap water?
Filtered, distilled, or clean spring water is best. Heavy-mineral tap water causes scale on the membrane over time and slowly reduces output. Never use carbonated water, juice, tea, coffee, milk, or anything else: they damage the electrodes and void the warranty.
How do I clean it, and what is in the cleaning tablets?
Rinse with clean water after every use. Once a week, remove the electronic base, turn the glass body upside down, add water and one tablet, wait 15 to 30 minutes, rinse well, reassemble. The tablets are an effervescent blend of sodium percarbonate, sodium carbonate and citric acid: chlorine-free, ammonia-free and biodegradable. Keep them away from children and never use them with the base attached.
Can I take it on a plane?
